Working from home is no longer the exception, and the Saudi Labor Law deals with it: a remote worker is a worker with full rights whenever they work under the employer's direction and supervision for pay. The differences lie in the details: tools, working hours, communication, and ending the contract. Here are your rights and what a remote work contract should include.
Is a remote worker covered by the Labor Law?
Yes, if the elements of an employment relationship exist: work for the employer, under its direction and supervision, for pay. Where the work is done does not change the relationship. Someone working for themselves without that dependency is a freelancer. Read the Freelance Document.
The Ministry of Human Resources has regulated flexible and remote work through decisions and programmes; check the current official text.
A remote worker's rights
| Right | When working remotely |
|---|---|
| Wages and their protection | Full, paid through the Wage Protection System |
| Social insurance | Registration required like any worker |
| Working hours and overtime | Under the law, with extra hours paid as overtime |
| Leave | Annual, sick and official holidays in full |
| End-of-service award | Due under the law |

What a remote work contract should include
- Whether the work is fully or partly remote, and any office days.
- Working hours and expected availability.
- Tools and devices: who provides them, and who pays for internet.
- How performance and output are measured.
- Confidentiality and data protection. Read the Personal Data Protection Law.
- Whether the employer may call the worker in, and with what notice.

Frequently asked questions
Can my employer require me to return to the office?
It depends on the contract; if it provides for remote work, a fundamental change needs your consent, and if remote work was temporary or flexible, it depends on what was agreed.
Who pays for internet and devices?
As the contract says; it is best to state this expressly.
Am I entitled to an end-of-service award while working remotely?
Yes, like any worker under the Labor Law. Calculate it with the end-of-service calculator.
