How to report
- Child Helpline 116111 for advice and reporting.
- Domestic violence reports 1919 at the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development.
- In urgent danger: the security authorities immediately.
The law requires anyone who learns of abuse or neglect, especially those who work with children such as teachers and doctors, to report it, and the reporter's identity is kept confidential.
What happens after a report
- The competent body verifies the report and assesses the risk.
- Protective measures are taken, which may include temporary removal from the source of danger.
- Care, rehabilitation and counselling are provided to the child and family.
- If the act is a crime, it is referred for investigation and trial.
Link to custody and divorce
The child's best interest is the test in custody cases, and proven abuse or neglect can change custody or set conditions on visitation. Document the risk and present it in the case.
Frequently asked questions
Does a report remove the child from the family at once?
No. Removal is used when there is danger; the rule is to address the case with the child staying in the family where possible.
