Registering a marriage contract protects the wife's dowry, maintenance and inheritance, proves the children's lineage, and eases every later transaction. It is now done electronically through a licensed officiant.

Steps

  1. Premarital medical test.
  2. Choose a licensed officiant.
  3. Enter the parties, guardian, witnesses and dowry.
  4. Verify identities and the bride's consent.
  5. Issue the contract and update civil records.

Where one party is not Saudi, prior permission is often needed. Read marrying a foreigner.

Conditions in the contract

  • The wife continuing work or study.
  • Separate housing or city.
  • Prompt and deferred dowry details.

A written condition is far stronger, and breach can ground annulment. A deferred dowry is a debt that comes before inheritance; read a wife's share.

Unregistered marriage

It can be proven by a claim before the personal status court with witnesses and evidence, and lineage likewise.
