Got a message saying "your account has been frozen", or found your bank account blocked when you tried to transfer? A frozen bank account in Saudi Arabia has specific causes: most are administrative and fixed in minutes, some come from an official order such as the Enforcement Court. And before anything else: many "account frozen" messages are scams after your details. Here is how to tell the two apart, the reasons for a freeze, and how to lift each one.
First: is the message real or a scam?
- It comes from an unknown number or a name that only looks like your bank's, and contains a link.
- It asks for a password, PIN or verification code. Banks never ask for these by phone or message.
- It rushes you: "your account will be suspended within an hour".
Do not click. Open your bank's official app yourself or call the number on your card. If you already entered your details on a suspicious link, call the bank at once to block the card and account, and see fraud in Saudi Arabia and how to recover your money.
Why bank accounts get frozen
| Reason | How it is lifted |
|---|---|
| Expired national ID or iqama | Renew it, then update your details in the bank app or branch |
| Dormant account | Ask the bank to reactivate it and update your details |
| Personal details not updated (know-your-customer) | Update them in the official app or at a branch |
| Expired commercial registration or signatory ID (business accounts) | Renew the registration or update the signatory |
| Attachment ordered by the Enforcement Court | Pay or settle the debt, or object on legal grounds. See the Enforcement Court |
| Freeze by an investigating authority | Only that authority can lift it; you need a lawyer to follow it |

The first four were listed by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) among the defined freeze cases.
If the bank will not lift the freeze
- Ask the bank in writing for the reason and the authority behind it.
- File a formal complaint with the bank and keep the reference.
- If it is not resolved, complain to the Saudi Central Bank through SAMA Cares.
- If the freeze caused loss or is part of a dispute, the route may be the banking disputes committee. See debt collection in Saudi Arabia.

Frequently asked questions
Can my account be frozen because of a debt?
Yes, if the Enforcement Court orders an attachment for an enforceable debt that was not paid. The bank is carrying out an order and cannot lift it itself.
How long until the freeze is lifted after I renew my iqama?
Usually right after you update your details with the bank, or shortly after, because the cause is administrative.
My company account is frozen. Why?
Most often an expired commercial registration, an expired signatory ID, or outdated company details. It can also be an enforcement attachment against the company.
